Description

  • An Ottoman fireplace or hearth embroidered textile panel
  • approximately 132 by 127cm., 4ft. 4in. by 4ft. 2in.
the blue satin ground embroidered in metal thread

Condition

Silk satin ground now faded to lavender with tears showing original blue colour. Numerous tears to silk along upper edge of piece. Embroidered densely with couched metallic thread all in good condition; some very minor abrasions and rips where embroidery and ground meet, some with visible amateur stitched repairs. Sides with unevenly trimmed silk surround now folded under, tears and rips along fold line. Embroidery in good condition.

Catalogue Note

Panels such as these were used in Ottoman campaign tents to replicate the place of the hearth at home; thus often  they were placed above a portable stove: the central motif imitates the arch that would have been above an open wall stove in the palace.
