Description

of baluster form on a short foot, carved with elaborate interlacing flowers on a matted punched ground, decorated with blue, red and turquoise enamelwork, with two central bosses of nielloed floral scrolls, the long neck decorated on either side with carved floral sprays on a red enamelled ground with a central flowerhead issuing a further palmette within a white enamelled cartouche, leading to opposing spouts and scrolling knop stopper, foot and spout with stamped hallmarks

Condition

vessel possibly a samovar adapted to form a spouted bottle, the two nielloed washers to the body cover holes visible from the inside, overall condition good, minor losses to enamel to the top of the neck and some missing around the foot of the rim, minor abrasions to base of the neck, as viewed.

Catalogue Note

The fine cloisonné enamel and nielloed silver body suggests that the vessel was manufactured in the Caucasus region and then adapted in Alexandria where the foot and spout were added to form an elegant pouring vessel.
