Catalogue Note

This and the preceding three lots are rare examples of early functional steel axeheads from Ottoman Turkey. The crescent and double-headed form are ancient types that continued in use well after the introduction of firearms mostly for ceremonial purposes in the 18th and 19th centuries. The present examples, however, are indubitably killing instruments.
