Condition

The screen overall is in good condition with some expected crackling to the lacquer background of the decorated panels, consistent with age, more pronounced near the hinges. The hinges are original to the piece. Colors are very fresh. From right to left: 1st panel: Some horizontal cracks secured across the panel between the lower hinges. Traces of an old restoration and re varnishing to the bottom, overall good. 2nd panel: Ditto. A few cracks secured to the bottom of the tree trunk. A restored crack above the animal to the bottom panel. Otherwise good. 3rd panel: Good, cracks stabilized across the feather tail of the second bird below in the upper register. 4th panel: Horizontal cracks secured in between the upper hinges along the leafy branches and across the fungus between the lower hinges. Some flakes to the lacquer on the horse beneath. Overall in good condition. 5th panel: Ditto. Some cracks secured between the upper hinges, more pronounced near the hinges. Some small scattered chips and flakes but overall good. 6th panel: Horizontal cracks secured across the hinges. A small chip 1 x 0.5cm to the upper left edge of the panel. Secured cracks along the tree foliage. A small chip in the lacquer to the edge of the panel in front of the phoenix head. Good condition otherwise. 7th panel: Some re lacquering to the ground by the left edge of the panel as well as on the leaves. Overall good. 8th panel: Overall good, horizontal cracks secured between the hinges. The lower left corner of the panel slightly grounded. 9th panel: Secured horizontal cracks between the hinges. Generally good. 10th panel: A few vertical cracks secured with darker re lacquering. Overall good. A chip to the panel's edge by the upper left hinge (2 x 0.8cm) 11th panel: Ditto. A few cracks secured, overall good. 12th panel: Generally good. Cracks secured across the hinges and to the left of one of the groups of figures (second group of figures from the top edge), a chip in the lacquer to the left edge. The reverse with archaistic objects and inscriptions with horizontal cracks similarly stabilized but overall good. A spectacular screen.
