Catalogue Note

A handwritten inscription on the reverse reads: Opgedragen uit achting vriendschap en Erkentenis Aan Den Weledelgestrenge Heer L.H. Eberson, Architect des Konings door Joh. Stortenbeker, 's Hage Dec 1875

Together with an explanatory ink on silk drawing summing up the artists depicted.

Johannes Stortenbeker, who was not only active as a genre-painter and portraitist, but equally as a painter of decorations in the royal palaces, was engaged to take care of an important part of the decoration in the 'Kunstzaal' of Het Loo Palace in Apeldoorn. He produced some paintings depicting the leading painters of the seventeenth century that were attached to the tympans. The present lot can be considered as a preliminary study for one of these.
The composition is based on the School of Athens by Raphael in the Stanze of the Palazzi Pontifici in the Vatican. The present lot was a present of the artist to the Dutch architect Lucas Hermanus Eberson (1822-1889) who was appointed architect des konings (the king's architect) in 1874. In this position he was commissioned by King Willem III of the Netherlands to design the 'Kunstzaal' in Het Loo Palace.
