Condition

The canvas has been paste lined and has a conventional wooden keyed stretcher. This is ensuring an even and secure support. The paint surface has an even varnish layer. Inspection under ultra-violet light shows some retouchings throughout paint surface, the most significant of which are retouchings in the sky and some other scattered retouchings are found in the wooded area. Some of the main cracks have been retouched and the darker clouds in sky have been strengthened with glazing. The painting appears therefore to be in good and stable condition and no further work is required.

Catalogue Note

Marinus Adrianus Koekkoek was born in Middelburg, the second son of Johannes Hermanus Koekkoek (1778-1851). He began his apprenticeship in his father's studio working with his elder brother Barend Cornelis Koekkoek. The two brothers began specialising in landscape painting in 1837. They also shared a studio in Kleve. The influence of his older sibling is clearly evident in this work, in the same superb attention to detail and botanical accuracy. The effects of light are particularly striking here, creating an interesting play of shaded and sunlit areas. This talented artist has succeeded in producing a landscape of such verity that the viewer could almost step into it and walk along the country road.
