Description

  • Irving Penn
  • 'mother and child (cuzco, peru)'
mounted, signed, titled, dated, and annotated by the photographer in ink and with his credit, Condé Nast, copyright, and edition information stamps on the reverse, matted, 1948, printed in 1949, one of no more than 15 prints in gelatin silver (Art of Fixing a Shadow, pl. 339; Moments Preserved, p. 95; Chicago, p. 112; Platinum Prints, p. 9, pl.17, including color or platinum variants)

Condition

This early print is in generally excellent condition. There is slight wear at the lower right edge and upper left edge/corner. There is minor chipping in the latter area. When examined in raking light, there is a tiny (approximately 1/8-inch) indentation not breaking the emulsion in the upper right quadrant.
In response to your inquiry, we are pleased to provide you with a general report of the condition of the property described above. Since we are not professional conservators or restorers, we urge you to consult with a restorer or conservator of your choice who will be better able to provide a detailed, professional report. Prospective buyers should inspect each lot to satisfy themselves as to condition and must understand that any statement made by Sotheby's is merely a subjective qualified opinion.
NOTWITHSTANDING THIS REPORT OR ANY DISCUSSIONS CONCERNING CONDITION OF A LOT, ALL LOTS ARE OFFERED AND SOLD "AS IS" IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE CONDITIONS OF SALE PRINTED IN THE CATALOGUE.
