Description

  • August Sander (1876-1964)/Gunther Sander (1907-1986)
  • 'jockey, wien'
the photographer's 'Köln Lindenthal' blindstamp on the image, signed, dated, and numbered by the photographer's son, Gunther Sander, on the reverse, matted, 1930, printed in 1969 by Gunther Sander from AUGUST SANDER's negative (Photographer Extraordinary, unpaginated; Citizens of the Twentieth Century, p. 87; Taschen, p. 46; NPG, p. 61)

Provenance

Gunther Sander, the photographer's son, to Gerd Sander, the photographer's grandson, late 1970s

Acquired by the present owner from the above, 1988

Condition

This print, on double-weight paper, is in generally excellent condition. Visible in raking light are the following: the top left and bottom right corners have very light creases and small linear cracks in the emulsion; and there are two hairline, one-inch, scratches that create an 'X' over the chest of the jockey, not breaking the emulsion. At the lower left edge of the print there are a few small areas of discoloration. These appear to be of a chemical nature and may have occurred during the printing process. The number of the reverse of the print is 'AS.I.7/6.1'
