Condition

This print, on double-weight, warm-toned paper, is in generally excellent condition. The bottom corners have multiple small creases, with some minor emulsion loss. At the top edge, on the right, there is a crescent-shaped handling crease that slightly breaks the emulsion. In raking light, two pencil-point-sized impressions are visible in the clothing of the boxer on the left. The number on the reverse is 'AS.I.7/7.7'

Catalogue Note

According to Gerd Sander, larger prints made by Gunther Sander, such as the image offered here and in following lot, were not printed in editions and are rare in this size format.  Gunther Sander printed one set of prints in this size for a Goethe Institute traveling exhibition of Sander's photographs.  These prints, mounted to sheets of aluminum, were most likely discarded at the exhibition's close.  The print offered here and in the following lot were printed by Gunther at the time of the exhibition and given as a gift to his son Gerd in the late 1970s.
