Description

  • Dorothea Lange
  • mother and child, san francisco
warm-toned, signed and dated by the photographer in ink on the image, tipped along the top edge to a mount, matted, 1928

Condition

This warm-toned print, on matte-surface paper with a lightly textured surface, is in generally excellent condition. The photograph reveals the softest details of texture in the highlights of the woman's silk shirt, and the deepest blacks in the background, and still manages to maintain a tremendous range of tone in the midtones. In high raking light, faint silvering is visible along the periphery. The photograph is tipped along the top edge, and attached at the bottom corners with modern linen tape hinges, to a thin cream-colored board. On the reverse of the mount, along the top edge, there is a strip of adhesive remnants from a previous mounting. The back of the mount is annotated 'H4' in an unidentified hand in pencil.
