Description

  • Dorothea Lange
  • 'migrant agricultural worker's family' (migrant mother and children)
ferrotyped, with a typed caption affixed to the image, the photographer's Resettlement Administration credit and number stamps and captioned and numbered in unidentified hands in pencil on the reverse, 1936 (Work of Dorothea Lange, p. 60; Photographs of a Lifetime, p. 20; Heart and Mind of a Photographer, p. 190; Dorothea Lange 55, p. 35; Human Face, fig. 4)

Condition

This ferrotyped early print, on single-weight paper, is in generally very good condition. We know that this is an early print because of its presentation and the Resettlement Administration stamps. There is slight wear at the edges, and the corners are bumped. The typewritten label has been affixed to the front of the print on the lower left corner, just above the margin, which is somewhat abraded in that area. When examined in raking light, a number of very faint scratches and handling creases not breaking the emulsion are visible. On the reverse, there is a 1/2-inch strip of white tape across the top edge, as well as 3 strips at the lower edge. A small adhesive address label, presumably that of a former owner of the photograph, is affixed at the lower right on the reverse.
