Description

  • Walker Evans (1903-1975)/Amos Chan (B. 1946)
  • 'main street, saratoga springs, new york'
large-format, the 'Walker Evans Estate' blindstamp and numbered '6/75' in an unidentified hand in ink in the margin, matted, 1931, printed in the early 1980s by Amos Chan from WALKER EVANS's negative, no. 6 in an edition of 75 (American Photographs, Part One, pl. 27; Simple Secrets, p. 47; Walker Evans at Work, p. 58; The Hungry Eye, p. 63; First and Last, p. 47; Rosenheim, pl. 37; Walker Evans and Company, pl. 87)

Condition

This luminous later print, on double-weight paper with a surface sheen, is in generally excellent condition. The two extremely thin, small marks in the upper central portion of the photograph, near the edge of the print, and two tiny droplets that appear to be black ink, just inside the upper left corner, are in the negative, rather than on the surface of the print.
In response to your inquiry, we are pleased to provide you with a general report of the condition of the property described above. Since we are not professional conservators or restorers, we urge you to consult with a restorer or conservator of your choice who will be better able to provide a detailed, professional report. Prospective buyers should inspect each lot to satisfy themselves as to condition and must understand that any statement made by Sotheby's is merely a subjective qualified opinion.
NOTWITHSTANDING THIS REPORT OR ANY DISCUSSIONS CONCERNING CONDITION OF A LOT, ALL LOTS ARE OFFERED AND SOLD "AS IS" IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE CONDITIONS OF SALE PRINTED IN THE CATALOGUE.
