Description

  • Lewis Wickes Hine
  • 'on the bowery--new york city, taking home the family job'
flush-mounted, a typed label, with the photographer's credit and extensive title, on the reverse, matted, 1909, probably printed in the 1920s or 1930s (America and Lewis Hine, p. 27; Women at Work, p. 3; Gutman, pp. 46-47, all variant croppings)

Condition

This photograph, on matte-surface paper with a slightly smooth finish, is in generally very good to excellent condition. Upon close inspection, a few very small impressions and light surface scratches scattered lightly overall are visible. A number of these very slightly break the emulsion. The edges of the print are lightly rubbed and have minor chipping. The back of the mount has light surface soiling, and has a wide strip of adhesive residue along the top edge. We base our dating of this print on the appearance of the photographic paper, the mount board, and the typed label, used by Hine on prints made during this period, on the reverse.
