BIBLIOGRAFIA
Various features of this elegant lacquered corner cupboard are typic of the taste for exhotism in Piedmont in the first half of 18th century. The crest composed by two scrolls is a solution often adopted by craftesmen working for the Court: in the catalogue of the famous exhibiotion Mostra del Barocco Piemontese (Torino, 1963), were reproduced corner cupboards with this kind of ornamental solution, all of them lacquered (vol.iii, tavv.241-2, 244). Less frequent appear the lateral conclusion of the front, with two flat pilaster topped by trygliphs, in a baroque taste.
Gold and red lacquer on a black ground was particularly used in Piedmont since the Royal achitect Francesco Juvarra designed in 1732 a spectacular room in the Palazzo Reale di Torino to adapt over the walls a group of oriental black and gold lacquered panels bought in Rome. In this masterpiece of Europan Chinoiserie some part of the decoration was completed by local painters, as Pietro Massa, that made a perfect imitation of the oriental style and technique. The same painter (and others like Francesco Maria Servonzelli) was longer active with walls and furniture decorations for others royal palaces in Piedmont and for those of the aristocracy.
