Jan Maurits Quinkhard Rees (Cleves) 1688 - 1772 Amsterdam

The catalogue illustration is representative of the painting, which is maybe warmer in tone in the flesh. The canvas has been relined and it is offered in a modern wood and gilt XVIII-style frame. To the naked eye no major restoration or damages can be seen and the painting appears in good condition. Inspection under ultra-violet light reveals unhomogeneous varnish layers and only tiny and marginal retouching, few millimetres each: some on the face of the man sitting to the left side, one on the left cheek of the man in the centre and one on his left little finger, two on the face of the man sitting to his right and on the carpet.

Oltre a essere stato un antiquario di grande successo, Jan Maurits Quinkhard fu anche un famoso ritrattista. I suoi ritratti di gruppo di governatori e commissari di diverse gilde, di cui questo è un tipico esempio, rappresentano di norma diverse figure sedute intorno a un tavolo ricoperto da un prezioso tappeto. Giudicando dal notevole numero di esemplari conosciuti, alcuni dei quali sono conservati al Rijksmuseum di Amsterdam, tali ritratti storici devono avere goduto di una notevole fortuna presso i contemporanei. Il dipinto che qui presentiamo è in particolare molto vicino al Ritratto di sei governatori della gilda dei chirurghi del Rijksmuseum, anche questo firmato e datato 1732 (vedi All the Paintings of the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam.
