Catalogue Note
Many of Marisol's sculptures are life-size (or nearly so) portrayals of famous personalities, infused with a sardonic wit which is almost never cruel. Some of her other 'sitters' are also artists: Picasso, de Kooning and Magritte; there is another sculptural portrait of Georgia O'Keeffe, in which she sits, on a tree trunk, with two large dogs.
The combination of materials in these sculptures (both worked and in 'found' condition') is so ingenious, that one might overlook how effectively mimetic the portrayals really are.
