Catalogue Note

This plate honoring Isabella d'Este, a prominent figure in the Italian Renaissance, was conceived for Judy Chicago's The Dinner Party. Chicago's triangular table installation, The Dinner Pary, is largely recognized as the beacon of feminist art of the 1970s. The final version of this work comprises thirty-nine place-settings arranged on the table, each honoring a strong female role model from history. The intricately-designed dish honoring Isabella D'Este employs, as do all the plates in The Dinner Party, a central motif referencing female sexual  anatomy.
