Catalogue Note

Winslow Homer created a series of Civil War illustrations for The Century Magazine from 1884 through 1887, which ultimately led to the publication of a four volume set.  For this series, Homer pre-dated his works to the dates of their related studies, completed during the Civil War in the 1860s. The present work, the only known grisaille from this series, is dated '62 but was painted in 1886.
