Catalogue Note

In a letter about the work, Dr. Kenneth Maddox writes, "Your landscape looks to Eagle Cliff in the distance, with Profile Lake in the foreground at Franconia Notch in the White Mountains.  The foreground on the left side is certainly fabricated by the artist.  The artist has included the distinctive ledge in a number of other paintings which omit the lake and feature a pioneer's cabin (this also would be pure fiction on the artist's part). One example is Eagle Cliff, New Hampshire, 1851, Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.  For your painting I think the artist has relied on an 1852 drawing which is in the collection of the Newington-Cropsey Foundation."
