Catalogue Note

In February and March 1929 Nicholson spent a working holiday in Ciboure, near St Jean de Luz on the Franco-Spanish border, with his wife Edie and children. The visit was a productive one and eleven landscapes were among the works shown at the Beaux Arts Gallery the following month. Fishing Nets, Ciboure (sold Christies, London, 28th November 1996, lot 20) is a similar scene of nets hanging up to dry, but without the mountain of La Rhune in the background.

Nicholson made another trip to Ciboure in the spring of 1939 when he was recovering from a mild stroke. He painted at least two works on this later visit but this landscape is from his earlier, happier stay.

We are very grateful to Patricia Reed for her help in cataloguing this and the previous lot.
