Provenance
Sale, Sotheby's, London, 24th May 1990, lot 701, whence purchased by the present owner
Condition
The canvas is original. There are a few light abrasions along the extreme edges, probably resulting from light frame rubbing. A small spot of paint lift is visible to the centre of the sea. The paint surface is dry and there is a network of fine craquelure throughout, and a patch of concentrated craquelure to the head of the boy in the centre. There are a number of tiny pinhead-sized pigment stains to the sky and sea. Ultra violet light reveals a passage of retouching around the town and to the sky on either side of the standing boy's outstretched arm. Held in a gold painted frame with fabric inlay in fair condition.
