Sotheby’s March Prints & Multiples sale realised exceptional results: the highest total for a London sale of prints in seven years in which 62% of lots achieved prices above their pre-sale high estimates. The sale achieved outstanding prices for some of the most celebrated Old Master, Modern and Contemporary printmakers.
Albrecht Dürer’s Melencolia I sold for £93,750 while Edvard Munch’s Two Human Beings. The Lonely Ones fetched an astounding £1,209,000, the highest price ever achieved for an unsigned print by the artist. Andy Warhol’s Campbell Soup I made a record-breaking £849,000 and Keith Haring’s Andy Mouse brought £681,000, the second highest price for a set of prints by Haring at auction and a world record price for the subject.
