Rachel Jones Biography

Rachel Jones is a visual artist based in London, working in the media of painting, sculpture, installation, and sound design. After receiving her Bachelor of Arts degree in Fine Art from the Glasgow School of Art in 2013 and her Masters in Art in Fine Art at the Royal Academy, London, in 2019, Jones has consistently pursued a practice that explores self-identity and personal history with a unique visual lexicon that engages with abstract yet visceral existential concepts. Through bold figures rendered with intense color and diverse textures, Jones’ works invite its viewer to bring their own personal backgrounds to its interpretation and thus interrogate concepts of community, shared history, and cultural background.

Many of Jones’ works are considered what she terms “sensory landscapes”—paintings that communicate through their pigment, rhythm, and presence rather than explicitly decipherable narratives or figuration. Her working process is both physical and emotional, often guided by the music she listens to when she paints, as the surface of layered oil stick and pastel blend to achieve bold tonal contrasts and rich textural variation of unadulterated pigment. She was one of the youngest of 31 British artists who participated in the group exhibition Mixing it Up: Painting Today at the Hayward Gallery; her works can be found in esteemed museum collections such as Tate, London; Arts Council England, London; The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston; and The Institute of Contemporary Art, Miami.
