Nikolai Fechin

Nikolai Fechin (1881-1955) was a Russian artist known for his portrayals of Russian peasants and Native Americans. Many of his early works focus on traditional life in rural Russia; upon relocating to New York, he became much in demand as a portraitist for the city's elite before moving to New Mexico and to produce paintings of the Pueblo peoples for which he is best remembered in the United States. Fechin's paintings are characterized by energetic brushstrokes and a careful attention to the humanity of his subjects.
