Justin Caguiat Biography

Caguiat’s intimately rendered, large-scale paintings on unstretched canvas portray a universe of figures and forms — representational and abstract — with a rich palette and layered surfaces that seem to float in a dreamlike world of memory and imagination. His works appear as landscapes or murals from a different era: anachronistic images with a register always in flux. Drawing stylistically from sources as varied as symbolist and post-impressionist painting, Viennese history painting, and the stylistic movements of Japan, Caguiat’s works present fantastical vistas from otherworldly realms. Caguiat, born in Tokyo in 1989, lives and works between New York and Oakland. Caguiat was recently the subject of a major solo exhibition at The Warehouse, Dallas, in 2022, and his work resides in the prestigious collections of the Dallas Museum of Art, Hammer Museum, Los Angeles; Hessel Museum of Art, Annandale-On-Hudson; and Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago, among others. The subtleties of Caguiat’s work coalesce in billowing landscapes which reveal space unbound
