The Expert Monterey Guide: What to Eat, See & Do

By Sotheby’s

RM Sotheby’s Monterey auction is just days away, and whether you are looking for a place to stay, test drive cars or take a tranquil break from the action-filled week, Sotheby’s has you covered. “With one of the most beautiful backdrops in the world, the Monterey and Pebble Beach car week experience can be almost euphoric in terms of pure beauty within nature,” said RM Sotheby’s Ian Kelleher, a 20-year Monterey auction attendee. Speaking to Kelleher, Sotheby’s specialists and the CEOs of Maserati and Sentient Jet, we gathered fifteen local hotspots in the Pebble Beach area to make your trip one for the books.

The Inn at Spanish Bay: “Often overlooked, the outdoor patio and lobby lounge at the Inn at Spanish Bay sparkle under a starlit sky as the multiple roaring fire pits provide ample warmth during those brisk August evenings. If you make it early enough, you can hear the daily bag pipers as they serenade the wildlife – it’s a magical and peaceful place to spend a few hours away from the business of old cars.”

Deetjen’s Big Sur Inn and Restaurant: “Just a short distance from Big Sur’s Post Ranch Inn lies one of my personal favourites, Deetjen’s Big Sur Inn and Restaurant. Deetjen’s is one of the most adorable and romantic spots in all of California. Set within the evergreen forest on the eastern side of Route 1, it offers unique dishes, flavours and tastes coupled with a candlelit atmosphere where each dining experience feels entirely catered to you and your guests.”

Carmel Valley Ranch: “Offering unfettered luxury, the Pool and Spa of the Carmel Valley Ranch is a welcome respite from the traffic of Pebble Beach and downtown Monterey. Between poolside cocktails, private massages and the lush lavender landscaping, it’s an unbeatable atmosphere in which to relax and unwind after a horsepower-infused day.”

L'AUBERGE CARMEL.

Andrew Collins, President & CEO, Sentient Jet

The Wharf Marketplace: “A little slice of Seattle in Monterey. It’s my go-to for a quick (but delicious) lunch.”

Bernardus Lodge & Spa: “Come here to get away from it all and relax in the wooded valley of the Santa Lucia Mountains.” Collins is also a fan of the lodge’s Lucia Restaurant & Bar, advising, “Go for the food, but stay for the 15,000-bottle wine list.”

L’Auberge Carmel: “You may think you have been transported once you step inside this boutique hotel. The best part is that you’re in the heart of Carmel-by-the-Sea. Tucked away inside the charming hotel is Aubergine, the perfect place for a special occasion. It’s tasting menu only, but you’ll definitely want to trust the chef on this one.”

Point Lobos State Natural Reserve: “If you’re a nature lover, or simply just appreciate nice scenery, you have to venture to Point Lobos.”

Carmel Mission: “I tend to like architecture and historical sites, so my favourite pick is The Basilica of San Carlos Borromeo de Carmelo Mission.” The stone church was founded in 1771.

Cannery Row Antique Mall: “Since I’m a veteran antiques shopper, and I leave no stone unturned, I like to check out the Cannery Row Antique Mall. It’s mostly American memorabilia, as well as some vintage clothing and jewellery.”

REID BIGLAND WITH THE MASERATI LEVANTE.

Reid Bigland, Global CEO, Maserati and Alfa Romeo

Seventh & Dolores Steakhouse: This brand new restaurant recently opened right by Villa Maserati, the marque’s hub on the Monterey Peninsula. It’s right in the heart of picturesque Carmel-by-the-Sea.

Post Ranch Inn: This luxurious resort, which sits 1,200 feet above the Pacific Ocean, is “a gorgeous property in Big Sur,” Bigland attests. To reach it, take a drive on one of the most stunning stretches of Highway 1.

Tehama Golf Club: Looking to spend an afternoon on the green? Throw your golf bags in a Maserati Levante, the marque’s first SUV, and head to the Tehama Golf Club, nestled between Carmel Valley and the Monterey Peninsula.

Throughout the entire Concours week, the Maserati Villa will be offering test drives to Sotheby’s clients.

Nate Borgelt, AVP, International Senior Specialist, Sotheby’s Watches

Point Sur State Historic Park: “For a great weekend excursion, and to get into a little more of the ‘California country,’ I like to venture south to the Point Sur State Historic Park for some sea otter spotting and expansive views by the lighthouse. Be sure to call ahead as it is by appointment only.”

Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca: “Going inland is, of course, the Raceway Laguna Seca, a must for any car (and race) enthusiast. The ‘corkscrew’ is the reason for trying to get any track time, and historic racing during the Rolex Motorsports Reunion is crucial for any spectator.”

Baldemiro's Taco Shop: “My favourite cuisine is Mexican, and there are a plethora of great taco shops around Monterey. I always stop at Baldemiro's in Seaside for a quick bite off the beaten path.”
