Sotheby’s has joined with IWC Schaffhausen to present the IWC Pilot’s Watch Annual Calendar Edition "Le Petit Prince" to be auctioned in aid of the Antoine de Saint-Exupéry Youth Foundation in the Important Watches sale on 15 November in Geneva.
For Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, author of The Little Prince, poetry and technology, writing and flying were two sides of the same coin and this special edition watch brings these two worlds together.
The dial includes an annual calendar displaying the month, date and day of the week in three separate windows. The reverse, visible through a sapphire crystal display back, allows the wearer to view the exquisite rich blue movement. This colourful feature, created using a highly complex process, was used by IWC for the first and only time in this unique watch. Further, adorning the movement and represented in solid red gold, The Little Prince himself may be seen staring in amazement at the sky, standing on the rotor in the form of a tiny planet revolving eccentrically around its axis, powering the automatic movement.
The funds raised from the sale will be used to launch the Fondation St. Exupéry in the US to partner with local NGO or Associations. The aim is to produce the book Le Petit Prince in Braille (text and drawings) and not only teach visually impaired children to read the text but also to read drawings.
This watch is being sold for charity and therefore has not been given an auction estimate; the current suggested retail price is CHF 35,000.
The Important Watches sale is in Geneva on 15 November.
