A Life Of Vinous Discovery
In all my experience of those who love and collect wine, there seems to be a close connection between many of these connoisseurs and their dynamic and entrepreneurial business lives. Perhaps it is their drive, talent and determination that lie behind their pursuit, and acquisition, of the best in the wine world. Or it may be that great wine gives them relaxation and pleasure after their challenging working days. Frankly, I feel it is a bit of both, having shared many bottles and memories with international business luminaries.
Dr. Albert Yeung is certainly no exception to this view, having used his knowledge and passion to build up a collection of wine that is truly inspirational. We are honoured to bring to auction this dazzling array of the finest wines that Bordeaux and Burgundy produce, the pinnacle of winemaking skill which, of course, brings enormous sensory enjoyment.
The Burgundy in this sale is reigned over by THE domain, the Domaine de la Romanée Conti. The whole extraordinary estate is represented here and it provides glorious, and rare, opportunities to compare the Domaine's Grand Cru vineyards with decades of vintages. There are many ways to do this, mixing and matching in myriad variations, but there is also an argument for sitting down with one or two great friends and just, quietly, imbibing a stupendous bottle and revelling in its depth and beauty. I find that DRC wines are show-stopping at any age and there are no hard and fast rules for 'perfect' drinking times. This auction provides the opportunity to test theories and to learn from them. Above all, every bottle is different, has its own profile and rate of development, and we can have the privilege of a life of vinous discovery.
Bordeaux is represented by a barrage of First Growths and their equivalents - think Petrus, that most tantalisingly exotic of all Clarets. And the range here goes back to the iconic vintages of the Forties… The collection 'bristles' with large formats, where it really matters - cataloguing these wines can induce gasps of wonder!
