Lan Ying (1585–1664) was one of the most prominent and influential painters in the late-Ming dynasty. He conjures up the vast expanse of misty mountains within a handscroll measuring 12 meters in length. By the time he completed the painting, it was already the eighth year of the reign of the Shunzhi Emperor in the Qing dynasty. The country had undergone dramatic change, prompting Lan Ying to express his melancholic emotions as he revisited this painting. Delicately painted long handscrolls of a grand landscape in the manner of Huang Gongwang, such as this one, are especially rare among museum collections and art markets.
