This is the most extraordinary, super-vetted, magical selection of wines from Burgundy's greatest jewel, Domaine de la Romanée Conti. It encompasses mature vintages that are just glorious to drink and share from now, to younger years on the verge of adulthood. I drink DRC wines whenever I am lucky enough to find them in my glass and never feel any guilt at consuming them, at any age. Comparative youth can be utterly beautiful at top Pinot Noir level, just as maturity can be beguiling in its myriad dimension. The full range of DRC's gems, both red and white, is breathtaking and one can only wonder as to how they do it. Walking round the vineyards, the situation and meticulous care are very evident and this knowledge, intelligence and experience is then matched in the cellar. Co-owned by the de Villaine and Leroy families, Aubert de Villaine has guided the Domaine to its great heights of history and reputation. He was early to embrace bio-dynamic farming, following a policy of high average age of the vines, low yields, precise timing of harvesting, selection of grapes and de-stemming according to harvest conditions, long fermentation with natural yeasts, new Tronçais oak barrels from wood that the Domaine dries itself, minimum racking, no filtration and bottling during periods of high pressure. This is philosophy put into practice. Should one have the great good fortune to own wines from the Domaine, and this is undoubtedly a remarkable opportunity so to do, decisions can be taken as to whether, amongst connoisseur friends, one takes a Grand Cru in several vintages to look closely at the development that steals up in the wine, or one chooses a single vintage and takes a cross-section of these wondrous plots to observe their fascinating, differing characteristics. My only advice here is to keep Romanée Conti itself a little longer than its cousins as this almost mystical wine likes to tease your patience! And normally, drink your Echézeaux first but, for the rest, play around - there are no rules for these gorgeous, highly individual wines. Sometimes they are flamboyant, sometimes they are mysterious.
