The sale for Contemporary Curated: Hong Kong will begin at 12:00PM HKT.

S otheby's Hong Kong presents the next edition of Contemporary Curated in partnership with NET-A-PORTER, the world's premium luxury e-tailer. For the first time, NET-A-PORTER turns its eye to the world of contemporary art having previously collaborated with Sotheby’s on luxury-themed curations in New York and London last year. The co-curation today marks Sotheby's Asia's first partnership with a fashion e-tailer – the exhibition theme shares a united vision to close the imagined distances between art galleries and would-be collectors, fashion runway and future trendsetters, glossy magazines and inspired readers.

From 25 June - 7 July, Sotheby’s Contemporary Curated Exhibition reflects on the visual and conceptual dialogues between art and fashion, showcasing hot on the heels artists including Ayako Rokkaku, Chris Huen Sin Kan, Shara Hughes and Liang Yuanwei alongside fashion parallels. NET-A-PORTER responds with an innovative approach through fluidity, colour, and structure as a guiding principle of experiencing the world.

CURATORS’ PICKS

TETSUYA ISHIDA,  THE MEN ON A BELT CONVEYER , estimate: 5,500,000-7,500,000 hkd. PHOTOGRAPHY: Egill Bjarki Jonsson
"When I think about what to paint, I close my eyes and imagine my-self from birth to death. But what then appears is human beings, the pain and anguish of society, its anxiety and loneliness, things that go far beyond me."
— Tetsuya Ishida
“The narrative offers a glimpse into the darker shades of Japan's 'Lost Decade', a historical period the curatorial team identified with the Balmain mini dress, whereby the sharp-shouldered silhouette and a wrap-effect bodice bring to mind the mono-coloured body-hugging dresses that trended during the late 80s.”
— Curator’s note

Liang Yuanwei, 2015.10 and 2015.07 (two works) , ESTIMATE: 700,000-1,400,000 HKD. photography: Egill Bjarki Jonsson
"I have always felt that truly great work should be silent like scenery. One experiences its deep meaning when one’s mind moves with it."
— Liang Yuanwei
“The gradation of the paintings mimics the reflective qualities of satin, an effect achieved by arduously applying pigments layer by layer. Similarities can be drawn between the scrumptiously textured painterly surface of Liang's work with an ivory bouclé-tweed mini dress by Rebecca Vallance that subtly glitters under light.”
— Curator’s note

Artist Quote - Shara HughesWithin an interior, you can make a landscape through a window or you can make another person’s painting within the painting, or you can paint figures or not… Interiors became the foundation where I could lay all different artists who have come before me into and onto the painting.”

AYAKO ROKKAKU,  UNTITLED , ESTIMATE: 800,000-1,500,000 HKD. photography: Egill Bjarki Jonsson
"It was after I grew up when I started to look carefully and think more about children’s drawing. I’m trying to keep the impression of pureness and freedom like children’s drawing in my works."
— Ayako Rokkaku
“That sense of vibrant, innocent freedom is expressed in Oscar de la Renta's mini dress, a joyous lilac piece whose fabric is gathered in rich cascades to create a voluminous, trapeze silhouette.”
— Curator’s note

TOMOO GOKITA,  THE BIRTH OF A ROOKIE MANAGER , estimate: 350,000-550000 hkd. photography: Egill Bjarki Jonsson
"I just can’t be bothered to use lots of colors. The colors get in the way. They are too noisy."
— Tomoo Gokita
“The fashions paired with the painting echo Gokita’s signature style in the metallic accents of Balmain's button-embellished tank, legging featuring Norma Kamali's dramatically flared hems emphasized by splits”
— Curator’s note

Curator's Note“We sees elements of KAWS’s distinctive lexicon in Benchellal's dress, which might have stepped out from a fairy tale animation into the real world, thanks to its cloud-like quality and the way the bow's tips are sculpted to appear frozen in mid-air.”
