Ornellaia Vendemmia d'Artista 2019 | Il Vigore | Nathalie Djurberg & Hans Berg

For this latest edition of Ornellaia Vendemmia d’Artista, the Ornellaia 2019 “Il Vigore” (Vigour), the Swedish artists Nathalie Djurberg and Hans Berg have focused on the theme of metamorphosis, inspired by the cyclical aspect of nature and its transformation, and the relationship between man and earth. These concepts are expressed both in the drawing designed for the 750 ml and 3-litre bottle label, and in the truly unique sculptures for the larger formats.

These incredible pieces of art represent the vigour of the natural world, the energy of plant growth and the flourishing conditions of nature that transforms itself, entirely appropriate given that it is this exact cycle of change, metamorphosis and growth which gives life to wines of great finesse and aromatic richness like Ornellaia 2019. A powerful, mysterious and intriguing wine, both full-bodied and vibrant in the mouth, it does not reveal all its facets at first taste, offering a new perspective with every sip and entertaining the palate with the curiosity of grasping all of its different nuances.

The Story Of Vendemmia d’Artista

Vendemmia d’Artista celebrates the exclusive character of each Ornellaia vintage. Since the release of Ornellaia 2006, an internationally famous contemporary artist has created a work of art for the estate and a series of limited-edition labels, inspired by the character identified by the winemaker to describe the particular features of the new vintage.

One hundred and eleven large formats, comprising one hundred 3-litre Double Magnums, just ten 6-litre Imperials and a single 9-litre Salmanazar, are created with unique works of art and released in order to raise funds for charity. Since 2019, the proceeds have been donated to the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation in support of an innovative project called “Mind’s Eye”, which helps bring the enjoyment of art to blind and low-vision visitors. Since 2012, the Vendemmia d’Artista project has been extended to each case of Ornellaia released (containing six 750ml bottles), in which one bottle out of six has a special label designed by the artist.

The Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation Mind’s Eye Program

Since 2009, Ornellaia has donated all the proceeds from its Vendemmia d’Artista charity auctions, overseen by Sotheby’s, in favour of art foundations and museums all over the world. From 2019, the Ornellaia Vendemmia d’Artista project raises funds to support the innovative Mind’s Eye program of the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation. This program, created by the Guggenheim’s education department, helps individuals who are blind or have low vision experience art at the Guggenheim Museum through all their senses. When all senses are invoked, the possibilities are expanded for making imaginative impressions, emotional connections, and long-lasting memories. The appreciation of art and great wines involves all the senses, and it is this idea that has inspired Ornellaia to support the growth of this particular program.Over the first three years of the collaboration, the donations of Ornellaia have allowed the Guggenheim to increase the Mind’s Eye program’s activities, purchase necessary tools for the development of the program and to cope with the sudden need, due to the pandemic, to transform the program in presence into a virtual experience. The Digital Mind’s Eye programs have successfully reached a growing audience, including participants from all over the world. The program delivered enormous social value at a time of great difficulty by keeping the participant community in touch with art and with each other. Following the new digital trend, the Guggenheim also launched a sensory-focused verbal description guide to the building, titled Mind’s Eye: A Sensory Guide to the Guggenheim New York. Based on verbal description, the heart of the Mind’s Eye program, this audio guide aims to do something truly unique: to describe Frank Lloyd Wright’s iconic building as a work of art itself through the voice of well-known New Yorkers.

The funds generated by the Ornellaia Vendemmia d’Artista project will allow the Guggenheim Museum to further develop the program, and ensure that its excellence continues to lead the way in museum programming for people who are blind or have low vision.
