Signed Cheng Men, Late Qing dynasty
Overall with wood frame 146 x 32.5 cm, 57½ by 12¾ in.
Each plaque approx. 26 x 26 cm, 10¼ by 10¼ in.

Acquired by the father of the present owner from Nessim Gallery in Sweden circa 1960, and thence by family descent.

Cheng Men (1834 - d. before 1908) was an artist of the late Qing period renowned for his paintings of landscapes, figure and flowers, recorded in the Dictionary of the Chinese Artists [Zhongguo huajia renming cidian] published during the Republican Period (1911-1949). Cheng Men is also known to have worked at Jingdezhen, and together with his contemporaries Jin Pinqing and Wang Shaowei, was a pioneer in the use of soft matte enamels on ceramics in the so called qianjiang style.
A related five plaque set, also acquired from Nessim Gallery circa 1960, sold at Upsala auction, Stockholm, 14th June 2014, lot 1188 while its pendant forming the pair later sold, 14th December 2014, lot 1056.
