Derived from Fanelli's model of a pacing horse, the present bronze exhibits a stippled surface treatment that is characteristic of late 16th and 17th-century bronzes made in Augsburg. Compare the Animals from a fountain of circa 1570-1590 in the Herzog Anton Ulrich-Museum, Braunschweig (op. cit., nos. 167-181) and the Leaping Unicorn by Hans Reisinger in the Grünes Gewölbe, Dresden (inv. no. IX 51).
