Description

LUGGALA, PROPERTY FROM THE COLLECTION OF THE HON. GARECH BROWNE

AN IRISH GEORGE II YEW-WOOD SIDE TABLE, CIRCA 1740

with a later black marble top above shell carved aprons, on cabriole legs with claw feet, reduced in width

78cm. high, 120cm. wide, 66cm. deep; 2ft. 6¾in., 3ft. 11¼in., 2ft. 2in.

Jacqueline O'Brien and Desmond Guinness, Great Irish Houses and Castles, Italy, 1992, p. 157

This distinctly Irish table, with its twin shell-carved apron and square paw feet, is made from yew, a timber that was popular with 18th century Irish furniture-makers. The dense grain of the yew-wood has been cleverly employed to mimic fur, enhancing the zoomorphic qualities of the table legs.
