Description

LUGGALA, PROPERTY FROM THE COLLECTION OF THE HON. GARECH BROWNE

AN IRISH GEORGE III MAHOGANY WINDOW SEAT, CIRCA 1760

upholstered in cross-stitch needlework

146cm. wide; 4ft. 9¼in.

Robert O'Byrne, Luggala, The Story of a Guinness House, China, 2018, p. 197 (illustrating the window seat with Garech seated)

A closely related suite of furniture, comprising of at least five side chairs, a sofa and a window seat also upholstered in cross-stitch needlework, was supplied to Lady Elizabeth Fownes of Woodstock, Co. Kilkenny, daughter of 1st. Earl of Bessborough (see The Knight of Glin and James Peill, Irish Furniture, Yale, 2007, p. 218, fig. 56). The ‘ears’ to the legs of these suites of seat furniture are a distinctly Irish feature intended to strengthen the joints.
