A PAIR OF CLOISONNE ENAMEL LOBED DOUBLE-GOURD VASES

17TH / 18TH CENTURY

十七 / 十八世紀 銅胎掐絲琺瑯纏枝蓮紋八方葫蘆瓶一對


each of octagonal section, the globular lower bulb sweeping into a cinched waist and surmounted by a smaller upper bulb and gently flaring mouth, enameled allover with meandering stylized lotus blooms and scrolls, the neck and mouth enameled with suspended jewels and pendants, all between a band of keyfret at the rim and upright lappets at the base (2) 


Height 8½ in., 21.8 cm

Collection of James Cicero Shaw and Aubra Tabor Shaw, received as a gift from Count Kawasaki in Japan, 1909.

For a very similar pair of cloisonne double-gourd vases, also attributed to the 17th/18th century, see one sold in these rooms, 30th-31st March 2004, lot 146. A 17th century example with similar lotus scroll, but without the suspended jewels, was sold in our London rooms, 29th October 1982, lot 17.


This lot is accompanied by an inventory listing dated 1953.
