Anonymous sale, London, Christie's, 4 July 1996, lot 379 (as Simon Pietersz. Verelst).

Born in The Hague, Verelst became a pupil in the Confrerie Pictura at the same time as his brother in 1663. He moved to London circa 1669 where he would eventually die, although records show that he also spent a little time in Paris. He was best known for his still life paintings of flowers and fruits. This painting, which was likely done later in his career after 1710, shows an understanding of light and color that is consistent with Verelst's works.
