CIRCLE OF HANS BOL

A PAIR OF WOODED LANDSCAPES

Both pen and brown ink over black chalk

Each sheet: 3½ by 5¾ in; 87 by 145 mm

Each framed: 9½by 11½in; 241 by 292 mm

(2)

Teodor de Wyzewa (1862-1917), Paris (L.2471)

These charming and spirited landscape drawings are not dissimilar to the way in which Hans Bol handles his pen and ink sketches. In terms of how the foliage is rendered, both of these sheets are reminiscent of Bol's manner of representing leaves, evident in a drawing such as The Parable of the Lost Sheep, sold in Amsterdam in 2005.(1) Whilst the present sketches are perhaps more free than some of Bol's more finished compositional drawings, there are elements which certainly place these fine and spontaneously drawn landscapes in the world of Hans Bol.
