C.R. Henschel, The Charles H. Thieriot Collection of Sporting Paintings, New York 1940, cat. no. 58.

John Nost Sartorius was one of the leading sporting artists of his day, and was patronized by the most famous sportsmen, including the Prince of Wales, the Earl of Derby, and others. Sartorius depicted the race in this composition in other paintings, including the version in the Brodick Castle, Garden and Country Park, Isle of Arran (2009.614). In both compositions, the famous racehorse Baronet is at full gallop, legs splayed, with his jockey in Royal colors gazing at the viewer.
