Paul Pfeiffer (US, b. 1966) is known for moving image works, photographs, and installations that explore the spectacle of public media and how it shapes our perception of the world. He often draws from recordings of televised sports and popular entertainment such as stadium concerts or game shows, which he carefully samples and re-edits. His works explore ways that desire and heroism are intertwined with the mechanisms of art, religion, politics, and nationhood.

This photograph is from a series titled after woodcuts by 16th-century artist Albrecht Dürer, whose prints paved the way for a new representation of the human figure. Here, Pfeiffer manipulates an NBA publicity image, stripping away contextual detail to reveal a sole player surrounded by spectators. In altering this image, Pfeiffer prompts questions about the construction of visual culture and spectacle, truth and fiction.

The Museum of Contemporary Art Los Angeles hosted Pfeiffer’s midcareer survey in 2023. His works are held in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art, New York; Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; Inhotim Museu de Arte Contemporanea, Brazil; Pinault Collection, Venice; Hamburger Bahnhof, Berlin; and others.
