Working in oil and hand-mixed acrylic, Marley Freeman (US, b. 1981) layers paint to depict abstract forms and veils of color. Rooted in a process of patient revisiting, her complex compositions can take months to complete. Freeman typically mixes gesso, acrylic, and oils, studying ways that the materials, as the artist has said, “want to perform.” Her creative process results in dimensional abstract investigations of color, light, and form. “Pigments have their own ways of acting and I became obsessed with learning their traits,” she reflects. Her titles are often excerpted from poetry and fiction, provoking deeper inquiry.
Freeman’s work is held in the collections of the Crocker Art Museum, Sacramento; Hammer Museum, Los Angeles; Los Angeles County Museum of Art; RISD Museum, Providence; San Antonio Museum of Art; Whitney Museum of Art, New York; University of Colorado Art Museum, Boulder; and Hessel Museum of Art, Annandale-on-Hudson, New York.
