In a practice that utilizes drawing, printmaking, painting, and sculpture, Stuart Nielsen (US, b. 1947) investigates color, geometric form, and pattern. Often executed at large scale, Nielsen’s paintings create immersive experiences that invite the viewer to contemplate the relationships between color and texture on the painting’s surface. Nielsen often arrives at his large-scale works through a rigorous practice of creating small-scale studies on paper that allow him to explore composition and color.

Nielsen’s art has been featured in solo exhibitions at Bockley Gallery, Minneapolis; Weisman Art Museum, Minneapolis; and Colorado State University, Fort Collins, among others. Group shows include presentations at the Milwaukee Art Center, Denver Art Museum, and Minneapolis Institute of Art. He is a two-time recipient of a Minnesota State Arts Board Fellowship, and has received a Bush Foundation Artist Fellowship. His work is held in the collections of numerous public and private institutions, including the Walker Art Center, Minneapolis Institute of Art, IBM, Target Corporation, US Bank, and General Mills.
