Samuel Opdyke, born in 1803, was the eldest child of Sheriff Robeson John Opdyke and Rebecca McAfee of Hunterdon County, New Jersey. He studied law and won an important case at age eighteen and was invited to join Senator Garret Wall’s law practice in Mount Holly, New Jersey. In The Opdyke Genealogy by Charles Wilson Opdyke, he is described as “the perfect specimen of an Opdyke”. He died from cholera at the age of twenty-six. The Opdycke family tree from New Jersey, starting with Samuel Opdyke's grandparents, Samuel Opdycke and Susannah Robeson, is in a unique Baroque style featuring many nude female figures. It was discovered unframed and folded in a drawer.
