Van Cleef & Arpels was founded by the Dutch diamond-cutter Alfred Van Cleef and his father-in-law Salomon Arpels in Paris in 1896. Tapping on the personal history of the founders, the brand was born from a marriage between two families and thus their pieces often feature romantic themes of lovers, fairies, flora and fauna. In 1906, following Salomon Arpels’s death, Alfred and two of his brothers-in-law, Charles and Julien, acquired space for Van Cleef & Arpels at 22 Place Vendôme, across from the Hôtel Ritz, where Van Cleef & Arpels opened its first shop and where the flagship boutique still resides today.
Over the decades, Van Cleef & Arpels built a reputation as a favorite jeweler to the stars and royalty, adorning the likes of Grace Kelly, Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, Princess Diana, and Elizabeth Taylor.
Their innovative spirit and penchant for timeless design extends to timepieces in addition to jewelry. The Van Cleef & Arpels Domino 39 was named after the popular board game, the diamond-set case is in the shape of a domino tile, and simultaneously pressing the top and bottom lugs reveals the watch concealed underneath. The design's linear elegance exudes an aura of classic luxury in solid white gold.
