12-inch dial with mask and scroll spandrels, the matted centre with subsidiary second dial and signed on an arched plaque Wm Webster, Exchange Alley, London, strike/silent lever at III, the arch with a date dial flanked by dolphin spandrels, the three train movement striking on a bell and quarter chiming on a nest of eight bells, the case with broken-arch moulded top and concave-sided cresting, frieze fret and brass-capped hood pillars, shaped trunk door and panelled plinth with shaped apron, the whole finely decorated in gilt with chinoiseries, foliage and flowers; finials later

William Webster, an eminent maker of clocks and watches, was apprenticed to his father, also William and a former apprentice of and journeyman to Thomas Tompion, in 1727. He was Free of the Clockmakers’ Company in 1734, Master in 1755 and a Liveryman until his death in 1775.
