Francisco Masriera

Dans la famille de l'actuel propriétaire depuis au moins trois générations. 

A Spanish painter, writer and goldsmith, Francisco Masriera attended Cabanel’s studio in Paris in about 1865. Particularly well known for his portraits, he was also admired for the refined precision of his technique. This spectacular painting of a reclining woman is characteristic of his talent, displaying his drawing skills and featuring a considered and balanced composition, clear, sharply contrasting colours and a powerful luminosity that seems to emanate from the reclining woman’s pink dress. The identity of the young woman is unknown, but her flighty dress and sensual pose suggest she belongs to the demi-monde. This enchanting composition is typical of Mastriera’s refined and imaginative elegance, full of decorative ambition. The sumptuous setting and the attention to textiles reflect the influence of Orientalist painting on the artist. In addition, the fresh colours seem to pay tribute to the ‘peinture galante’ of Watteau and Fragonard, as does the frivolity of the subject, with the overturned glass subtly evoking inebriation.

Peintre, écrivain et orfèvre espagnol, Francisco Masriera a fréquenté l'atelier de Cabanel vers 1865 à Paris. Particulièrement célèbre pour ses portraits, il est connu pour la finesse et la précision de sa technique. Ce spectaculaire tableau d'une femme allongée est caractéristique de son talent, on y retrouve son habileté au dessin, une composition soignée et équilibrée, des couleurs franches et un contraste vif entre elles ainsi qu'une forte luminosité semblant irradier de la robe rose de la femme allongée. L’on peut d’ailleurs s’interroger sur l’identité de cette jeune femme dont la robe frivole et l’attitude lascive suggèrent son appartenance au « demi-monde ». Cette séduisante composition témoigne de la préciosité pleine de fantaisie et d'ambition décorative de Masriera. Le décor somptueux et les motifs tissés rappellent l'influence de la peinture orientaliste sur l'artiste. Par ailleurs, la fraîcheur des couleurs employées semble rendre hommage à la peinture galante de Watteau et Fragonard tout comme la légèreté du sujet évoquant subtilement, avec le verre renversé, l'ivresse.
