Two volumes (from a set of six) of a small format bible in a fine binding made for Pius V, when he was still Cardinal of Santa Sabina. A very similar design of binding was made by the workshop of Maestro Luigi for the French king (Reliures royales de la Renaissance, item 27).

2 volumes, 16mo (114 x 73 mm). Roman type, 28 lines plus headline. collation: a-z8 A-Z8 2k-2y8; a-z8 2a-2z8 A-L8 M10: 472 + 466 leaves. Woodcut initials. (Some foxing throughout).


binding: Roman brown morocco gilt (117 x 85 mm), early 1560s, double gilt fillet around sides, gilt arabesque cornerpieces, row of gilt flame tools at head and tail of central panel, in centre of upper cover a cardinal's hat over a cartouche with painted arms of Michele Ghislieri, upper covers lettered in gilt "MICH•GISL•|CARD•S•SAB•", lower cover with an outer frame of repeated tool and a large central design of four cornerpieces joined together, spine with small gilt flower stamp in each compartment and title in gilt in top compartment, edges gilt and gauffered with title in ink along fore-edges. (Small areas of repair to boards).
