Description

CYRILLUS HIEROSOLYMITANUS. Catecheses illuminatorum XVIII. et quinque mystagogycae. Quae tempore quidem Hieronymi et Damasceni extabant, ut ipsi testantur proximis vero aliquot seculis, in abstrusis quibusdam locis delitescentes. Paris: Guillaume Desbois, 1564

One of a small number of fanfare bindings displaying the arms of an as yet unidentified member of the Daffis family. Another covering a Cologne 1559 edition of Hegesippus is cited by Olivier Pl. 78 and Geoffrey Hobson, Les reliures à la fanfare (London 1935), p.4 ("Troisième Liste: Les reliures 'à la fanfare' proprement dites", no. 12). That binding is attributed by Mirjam Foot to "The Binder who worked for Jacques de Malenfant" (Henry Davis Gift I, p.168, no. 15).

8vo (168 x 105mm). Roman and italic types, 31 lines plus headline. collation: ā8 ē4 A–Z8 AA–BB8 C4 (last leaf blank): 216 leaves. Woodcut initials, ruled in red.

binding: Parisian primitive fanfare armorial binding, bande chargée d'une rose entre 2 molettes, ca. 1564, for a member of the Daffis family, 3 gilt fillets, around sides, design of interlacing strapwork forming central ovoid cartouche and semi-circular compartments above and below and at sides, all fields filled with curved and spiralling fillets bearing solid and azured leafy tools and stylized flower and bud tool, flat spine continuing cover design with a cartouche near head containing title "D./CYRIL/CATEC.", edges gilt and gauffered to a floral pattern. (Expert repairs to joints and spine ends.)

provenance: A member of the Daffis family (of Toulouse), arms on binding — inscription on title "Sancti Velusiani Fuxensis", probably the Abbaye St-Volusíen at Foix (destroyed in 1580 during the religious wars) — Cuvreau Expertises Enchères SVV, Livres rares, anciens et modernes, Paris, 24 March 2009, lot 9. acquisition: Purchased at the preceding sale. references: USTC 153484
