ARISTOTELES. De coloribus libellus, a Simone Portio Neapolitano Latinitate donatus, & commentariis illustratus: una cum eiusdem praefatione, qua Coloris naturam declarat. Florence: Lorenzo Torrentino, 1548
First edition of this treatise on colour theory, attributed to Aristotle but probably by one of the students of his Peripatetic school. It was translated into Latin by Simone Porzio, an Aristotelian scholar from Naples who taught at Pisa and was a member of the Florentine Accademia.
4to (220 x 140 mm). Roman and Greek type, 33 lines plus headline. collation: A-Z4 Aa-Bb4: 100 leaves. Woodcut initials, a few neat manuscript corrections. (Some damage and staining to head of gutter, first two leaves repaired at head.)
binding: Contemporary limp vellum (225 x 150 mm), fore-edge flaps (now flattened), stubs from two pairs of ties, title lettered across top of textblock. (Binding slightly soiled, head of spine repaired, other slight damage to spine.)
